Skin Care Regiment. Part 5. Serum.

Now we got to the serum application part.

Most incoming questions: What is a serum? What is it used for? Do I need to use it?

So what are those magical potions? What is it in those little ampoules, vials, tubes? They are so tiny and also relatively expensive. For years serums have been favorite esthetician’s tool to deliver fast and visible results. Then serums come to mass market, many of us did not know what to make of them, how to use them, who needs to use them.

Serums come in liquid form and contain highly concentrated measurements of key ingredients which help to treat a specific skin concern. A good facial serum will contain up to 70 percent of active ingredients which work to give you healthier looking skin. Serums are made with very small molecular structure; so they penetrate the skin much more deeply than moisturizers do. The best reason to use a serum is because it reaches parts of the skin a cream would not. They can tackle the problem much more effectively.

Who typically would use serums? Serums are free from oily and waxy substances, so are great for people with particularly oily skin. Men more likely will use serums instead of creams. From my male clients I know, if they will use something on their face, they want to see results fast (“now” is even better). If they don’t see the result, they say: “this thing doesn’t work” and they stop using it.

Serums are great to use around the eyes. Skin around the eye area is a lot different than the rest of the face. There are no oil glands there, so skin tends to get dry and wrinkled. Also, the skin of the eye area is much thinner and can’t absorb heavier products. Not all serums designed for that area. Before you buy one make sure it is safe to use around the eyes.

It is all different kinds of serum exist: moisturizing, anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, lipid restore, anti acne, and brightening serums. If you have number of things you would like to improve in your skin, you can use number of different serums together. They very light texture, serums absorb much faster than creams, and they do not create that greasy shiny look on your skin everyone cannot stand.

Additionally, you may like to know that it isn’t always necessary to use a face serum with a moisturizer. If you’re using a moisturizing face serum with emollient properties, your serum may double up as a moisturizer.  But if your skin is very dry and needs more hydration, then you will need to use a face cream for richer moisture, on top of the face serum.

You should apply your serum after you cleanse and tone, but before you moisturize, in order to get the most benefit from it. Usually, you need to apply only few drops of it. It seems a little, but trust me, it goes a long way. If you apply serum regularly, you should see a huge improvement in your complexion and your skin will be much healthier with it.

If you asking: should I use facial serum?” You need to decide. If you are 15 years old and have no problems on your skin, the answer is probably no. By if you are 25 (or more), it is definitely something to consider if you want to keep you skin glowing and radiant for years to come.

  • Hi Nataly, I am interested in using serums from different brands together – E’shee Cellular Serum 1, and Osmotics Renovage. Will this work? Can I layer serums from different companies, and will they both penetrate my skin adequately?

    Thanks :)

    • Hi Susan! Yes, you can do it. Using E’shee’s Serum Cellular Repair 1 with other brands, we always recommend to apply it first. It absorbs fast (about 10 to 15 seconds), and does not create oily layer on your skin, so other products you use will penetrate as well. Some serums from different brands contains heavy silicons and/or oils. No matter what brand is it, always apply water based serums (or lighter ones) first.
However, when you trying to determine, which product works for you better, use only one at the time for about two weeks to one month. If you already used Osmotics Renovage and you know what it does for you, starting to combine it with E’shee’s Serum Cellular Repair 1 – you will see a difference.
